I've let my Vari-Mu go, found it a bit too "polite" for my taste. I scooped up one used at $1600 and have been very pleased. I highly recommend this unit in its price point. I got a HM2 Nail a few months ago and it has been living on the 2 buss of my Harrison 2824 ever since. IMO, it's strength is acoustic and not extremely heavy pop/rock/country, etc.+1 It's extremely versatile ranging from blazing fast to slow, has side chain HPF, and wet/dry. The Nail somehow achieves both which IMO is perfect for mix bus.

Pro Tools Playback Rig HD I/O's->SSL 4000 G series console->Focusrite Red 3->SSL Bus comp->Elysia Xfilter eq-> Cartec THC/A Designs Nail (both Parallel Mix)->Lavry AD10->(AES input) Pro Tools Capture Rig 96k-> TC Finalizer 96k, as a Highpass filter (AES Hardware insert) ->Waves L2 hardware (AES Hardware insert) -> Cranesong Avocet (AES input)-> speakers :-) and sounds killer, everything is very subtle/just tapping. This is my current setup, it's taken a while to figure it all out.
